Story of childhood cancer survivor, Marnie

MarnieThe first day of school is always filled with big dreams. And hope.

Marnie’s first day of kindergarten is one her mother, Robbie, will never forget. But it’s for a reason we hope you’ll never have to consider.

Less than 72 hours after walking Marnie into her classroom for the first day of school, Robbie heard an emergency room doctor say: “Your daughter has a malignant tumor in her right kidney. The CT scan caught the lower part of her right lung, so we know the tumor has spread to her lung.” The news only worsened with Marnie’s second scan – the cancer had metastasized into both lungs and the large vein leading into her heart.

After two rounds of chemotherapy to try and shrink the tumor, six-year-old Marnie endured kidney surgery followed by eight days of radiation and nine more rounds of chemotherapy.

Thankfully, Marnie just celebrated seven years of being cancer free. She’s in the seventh grade and loves to sing, act, and play volleyball. But Marnie’s fight is never far from Robbie’s mind, and it has made her a passionate advocate for childhood cancer research.

“When you hear your child has cancer, you need hope. Hope that they will survive. Hope that they will not have long-term effects. Hope that their dreams and wishes in life will come true. Research provides the hope needed to make it through the devastating words – ‘Your child has cancer.’”

You can help provide hope to families like Marnie’s by purchasing a Corvette ticket and funding childhood cancer research for less toxic, more effective treatments that lead to better outcomes for kids diagnosed with cancer.

Our Past Winners

Corvette past winners 2006 to 2009

2006 — The first year of the Corvette program, 75-year-old Norma Callis of Woodland, CA, was our winner. Norma didn’t have a driver’s license, so Jeff gave her husband the rundown.

2007 — Bob Marian of Daphne, AL, bought his ticket after being inspired by the work of JGCF at Riley Hospital for Children, near his former hometown of Evansville, IN.

2008 — Tom Zacha from Shumway, IL, had always been active helping kids through his local Elks Club, so he was happy to support kids with cancer.

2009 — Buying a ticket to benefit children was a no-brainer for retired school teacher Richard Sivulich of Highland, IN.

Past Corvette winners 2010 to 2013

2010 — The day before we announced Cindy McCotter from Matthews, NC, as our winner, her husband, Greg, had received his own cancer diagnosis. We’re very happy to report that Greg is doing well today!

2011 — The winner of our only three-finalist drawing, Jay Nadal of Lakeland, FL, continues to be one of the biggest supporters of our Corvette program.

2012 — Paula Heath of Castroville, CA, and her husband brought freshly harvested artichokes when she came to pick up her new wheels.

2013 — BEST GIFT EVER. Howard Rosencrance from Shickshinny, PA, received his winning ticket as a Father’s Day present.

Corvette past winners 2014 to 2017

2014 — A thoughtful and talented woodworker from Painesville, OH, David Tiedman sends handmade wooden ornaments for the JGCF Christmas tree.

2015 — After winning his Corvette, Geovanni Bernardino of Bronx, NY, became one of the first monthly donors in JGCF’s Every Hour Counts program.

2016 — David Rightler of Crossville, TN, is a veteran and former employee of a competing auto manufacturer based in Detroit.

2017 — This year it could be YOU who drives away in Jeff’s Corvette, while helping to beat childhood cancer!
